PEOPLE TEND TO RESIST MOVING

TOWARD THE UNFAMILIAR

If you see that your present course is taking you toward unfamiliar territory, toward activities, events or an environment which you are not sure that you can handle, you will tend to dig in your heels and find creative ways to change course or resist moving in that direction.

For example, you may have decided that you want a promotion to a position of greater responsibility (and earnings) within your company. However, so long as that new position is outside of your Comfort Zone—so long as it is unfamiliar territory—you will find all sorts of ways of resisting progress in that direction and avoiding opportunities which would take you there.

But how about progress? People do change. If everyone always moved toward their Comfort Zone or recreated it, things would always stay the same! Not at all. There is no contradiction between this principle and the fact that we do see change, growth, progress in both individuals and groups. The solution to that apparent dilemma lies in the principle we looked at at the end of Chapter 9 (page 94).
